The installation ‘Outside-In’ was made specifically for BAC IV and is inspired by the Cordoban leather wall coverings of the 16th and 17th centuries. It reflects the cross-cultural pollination, born of other cultures and times, which is so clearly seen in the Raval neighbourhood of Barcelona, a contemporary cradle of cultures, where the work was first exhibited. The undulating glass panels incorporate the symbol of the pomegranate, a motif which has a symbolism and relationship with these cultures. The installation plays with idea of the skin as the outer layer of a container, “the body” converted into an interior element. The glass book, ‘The Book of Untold Stories’ bears the traces of history, like a sacred book set on its own lectern, with pomegranates bursting through the open pages.
